چکیده

Measurement of the colloid osmotic pressure of the blood, or argument depending thereon, has been involved in much recent work on the origin of tissue fluid from the blood through capillary walls and in work on changes taking place in the blood due to various causes. It may be sufficient to mention Krogh (1929), Landis (1925-26, 1927, 1930, a, 1930, b), Loewen, Field, and Drinker (1931), Meyer (1931, a) and Clark and Helling (1931). The colloid osmotic pressure of the blood has been found of especial significance in edema formation (Govaerts, 1924, 1927; Schade and Claussen, 1924; Schade et al., 1926; Kylin and von Pein, 1931; Meyer, 1931, b; Iversen and Nakazawa, 1927; Meulengracht, Iversen, and Nakazawa, 1928; and others). It, therefore, becomes increasingly necessary to obtain valid and workable methods for measuring colloid osmotic pressure. Two relatively simple methods described by Krogh and Nakazawa (1927) have been much used. They, like other methods for this purpose, involve the use of artificial membranes and t,he objection has been raised that the colloid osmotic pressure obtained by such laboratory methods is not the same as the colloid osmotic pressure we would like to measure, that effective in the capillaries, because the membrane of the capillary wall and the artificial membranes used in the laboratory are very unlike, and especially it is claimed they ma,y be fatally unlike in that the electrical properties of the membranes may invalidate the readings secured by their use. While it is obviously true that the actual osmot,ic conditions

Stability of Colloid Osmotic Pressure of Serum Protein By

The work of earlier investigators, Govaerts (1), Barath (2), Cope (3), Peters et al. (4) and Kylin (5) has given the impression that the colloid osmotic pressure is not only lowered with decrease in serum protein but its specific pressure (pressure per unit of protein) is also diminished. The lowering of specific pressure has usually been related to a greater decrease in the albumin fraction of...

AGAINST THE VALIDITY OF THE CLOSED SYSTEM MODEL FOR CALCULATING OSMOTIC PRESSURE

This paper criticizes the model and the new definition for osmotic pressure given by Parsafar et al. [J. Sci. I. R. Iran, Vol. 10, No. 4, 233 (1999)]. The model is a closed system containing 1 kg of solvent plus m mole of solute at constant temperature and under pressure P0 + ? where P0 is the standard pressure and ? is the osmotic pressure of the corresponding m molal solution. While the total...

Colloid Osmotic Pressures of Serum Proteins

The albumin component is, by reason of size and net charge and concentration, chiefly responsible for plasmas osmotic activity ( 1) .2 The validity of Starling's hypothesis in the dynamics of water balance in conditions associated with hypoproteinemia has been the subject of considerable recent discussion. The basic experimental problems involved have been considered by some of us in other publ...

Measurements of serum colloid osmotic pressure are of limited usefulness.

We examined the usefulness of serum colloid osmotic pressure measurement in patients with chronic rather than acutely occurring low serum protein concentrations. We used two oncometers, the IL 186 Weil Oncometer and the Wescor Model 4100; results from the two instruments were interchangeable. Values for the colloid osmotic pressure were compared with those for serum total protein (r = 0.783) an...
